NICRAS
In Belfast, in 2012 would you have believe that NICRAS supported 16 destitute asylum seekers with £10 a week and a small food parcel from NICRAS?....They had absolutely no access to mainstream benefits, housing, a G.P and are not allowed to work, to earn enough money to live above the poverty line? NICRAS also supports others (mainly families) who are eligible for mainstream benefits, but are living on amounts well below the poverty line due to delays in processing claims for Tax Credits and Child Benefit. Currently, 25 individuals or families receive regular food parcels, with a further 35 receiving short term support. NICRAS would like to raise awareness of this issue and set a challenge to 4 individuals in Belfast to try and live as a destitute asylum seeker for 1 week leading up to Refugee Week 18-24 June 2012. Along the lines of the Oscar nominated, 2004 documentary, ‘Super Size Me’ ; NICRAS worked with Lamb Films to produce two 5-6 minute films documenting the experiences of individuals that took part part in this challenge.
